Dr. Nicole M. Cain is an associate professor in the department of clinical psychology in the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from The Pennsylvania State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine with The Personality Disorders Institute. She is an associate editor for the Journal of Personality Assessment and she is currently a representative-at-large for the Society for Personality Assessment. She is a past president of the Society for Interpersonal Theory and Research. Dr. Cain’s primary research interests focus on understanding how personality pathology and interpersonal functioning impact diagnosis, psychotherapy process, and treatment outcomes. Her recent work has incorporated ecological momentary assessment methods to understand how personality pathology impacts interpersonal and emotional functioning in daily life, and how interpersonal problems influence maladaptive outcomes such as suicidal behavior. Her research has been funded by the International Psychoanalytic Association and the National Institute of Mental Health.
