Understanding Parental Stress in Families of Color: Contextualizing the PSI-4

Parenting stress is prevalent, especially among parents of color. This presentation will provide an overview of parenting stress and how to assess this construct, outlining contextual factors unique to families of color that contribute to parenting stress. Emphasis will be placed on how to use the Parenting Stress Index, Fourth Edition (PSI-4). When used as part of a comprehensive evaluation, the PSI-4 can improve equity in assessment and facilitate early identification and intervention to assist children and parents in obtaining the educational, behavioral, and social support they need.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Explain the construct of parenting stress and how this impacts the wellbeing of children, parents, and family functioning.
Identify contextual factors unique to families of color that exacerbate parenting stress.
Demonstrate how to use the Parenting Stress Index, Fourth Edition (PSI-4) comprehensive and short forms as an evidence-based tool to assess the construct of parenting stress.
